Every generation of Christians has asked a similar question:
Key Scriptures: Matthew 24:14; Matthew 28:18–20; Acts 1:8; Revelation 7:9–10
Could Our Generation Help Finish the Great Commission?
Every generation of Christians has asked a similar question:
"Will we see the Great Commission fulfilled in our lifetime?"
Only God knows the exact answer.
Jesus Himself declared:
"But of that day and hour no one knows..." (Matthew 24:36, NKJV).
Yet Jesus also gave His Church a remarkable promise:
"And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come." (Matthew 24:14)
The return of Christ is in the Father's hands.
The proclamation of the gospel to all the nations is the Church's responsibility.
The question is therefore not merely when Christ will return.
The question is whether our generation will faithfully complete the part God has entrusted to us.
There Has Never Been Greater Progress
We have good reason to thank God. Never in history has the gospel spread so widely.
Today:
- The Bible has been translated, in whole or in part, into over two thousand languages.
- The Church is growing rapidly in many parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
- Missionaries now come from every continent, not only from Europe and North America.
- Digital technology allows the gospel to reach places that were once inaccessible.
- Indigenous churches are planting churches among their own people.
- Disciple-making and church-planting movements are multiplying across many regions of the world.
These are remarkable evidences of God's faithfulness.
Jesus is building His Church exactly as He promised (Matthew 16:18).
Yet the Task Remains Unfinished
Despite this progress, much remains to be done. Millions of people still live with little or no meaningful access to the gospel.
Many ethnic communities have:
- 1.9 billion individuals in Frontier People Groups have few or no known believers.
- Over 7,000 Unreached People Groups have less than 2% evangelical Christians
- No self-sustaining local church.
- Over 2,000 languages have limited or no access to Scripture in their heart language.
- Very few workers intentionally making disciples among them.
- 87% of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists live their entire lives without ever meeting a follower of Jesus.
Others have never heard His name explained accurately.
This is what mission leaders often call the unfinished task.
The challenge is no longer simply reaching countries.
The challenge is reaching every people group with the good news of Christ.
God's Goal Is Every People Group
Jesus commanded:
"Make disciples of all the nations..." (Matthew 28:19).
The Greek phrase πάντα τὰ ἔθνη (panta ta ethnē) refers not primarily to modern political nations but to ethnic peoples or people groups.
A people group consists of people who share a common language, culture, and identity and who can naturally spread the gospel among themselves.
God's purpose is not merely that every country possesses churches.
His purpose is that every people group has a vibrant, multiplying community of Christlike disciples capable of reaching its own people and participating in reaching others.
This vision reaches far beyond geography.
It reaches every culture.
Every language.
Every tribe.
Every community.
Why Has the Task Taken So Long?
The unfinished task is not caused by a lack of God's power.
Nor is it because the gospel lacks saving power.
Several challenges have slowed progress.
Sometimes the Church has focused more on maintaining existing ministries than making new disciples.
Sometimes believers have assumed that missions belongs only to specialists.
Sometimes churches have concentrated their resources where the gospel is already well established while neglected peoples remain largely unreached.
At other times persecution, war, political restrictions, and spiritual opposition have made gospel work extremely difficult.
Yet throughout history, God has continued advancing His kingdom despite every obstacle.
His mission has never stopped.
Why Our Generation Is Uniquely Positioned
Never before has one generation possessed so many opportunities.
Today we have:
- Rapid global travel.
- Instant communication.
- Digital Scripture distribution.
- Online theological education.
- Artificial intelligence and translation tools.
- Global prayer networks.
- Collaboration between churches across continents.
- Marketplace professionals serving as disciplemakers in places traditional missionaries cannot easily enter.
God has entrusted our generation with remarkable resources.
With greater opportunity comes greater responsibility.
The question is not whether enough resources exist.
The question is whether God's people will use them sacrificially for His glory.
Every Believer Can Help Finish the Task
Many Christians wonder,
"What difference can one person make?"
The answer is:
More than you imagine when your life is surrendered to Christ.
You may help fulfil the Great Commission by:
- Living a Christlike life that attracts others to Jesus.
- Praying faithfully for unreached peoples.
- Making disciples where you live.
- Supporting missionaries and church planters.
- Welcoming international students and immigrants.
- Using your profession to open doors for the gospel.
- Giving generously to missions.
- Going wherever Christ leads you.
Some are called to cross oceans.
Everyone is called to cross the street.
Every disciple has a role in God's mission.
Our Vision Must Match Heaven's Vision
John was given a glimpse of heaven's future.
He saw:
"A great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb..." (Revelation 7:9)
Notice what is absent.
No people group is missing.
No language is forgotten.
No culture is overlooked.
The worship of heaven will reflect the diversity of God's creation united in Christ.
If that is heaven's vision, it should become the Church's vision today.
We should labour, pray, give, send, and go until every people has the opportunity to join that eternal worship.
The Greatest Generation?
History often speaks about "great generations."
But perhaps the greatest generation will not be remembered for its wealth, technology, or military achievements.
Perhaps it will be remembered because it wholeheartedly embraced Christ's final command.
Imagine what could happen if every believer became a Christlike disciplemaker.
If every church became a sending church.
If every profession became a mission platform.
If every spiritual gift were fully mobilised.
If every nation joined hands to reach every nation.
The possibility is no longer unimaginable.
By God's grace, it is increasingly attainable.
A Prayer for the Unfinished Task
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for entrusting Your Church with the greatest mission on earth.
Thank You for the remarkable progress You have already accomplished through Your people.
Forgive us whenever we have become comfortable while millions still wait to hear Your name.
Enlarge our vision. Strengthen our faith. Fill us with Your compassion for every people group.
Show us our place in Your global mission.
May our generation faithfully do everything You ask of us until every nation has the opportunity to hear, believe, and follow You.
For the glory of Your name. Amen.
Your Next Step
Prayerfully ask yourself:
- Do I truly believe that the Great Commission can be completed?
- What part has God entrusted to me?
- Am I investing my time, gifts, profession, finances, and prayers in God's global purpose?
- What step of obedience can I take this week to help advance the gospel among the nations?
One day the Church's mission will end. Not because it failed. But because it succeeded.
The day will come when people from every nation, tribe, people, and language stand before the throne of God and worship the Lamb.
Until that glorious day, let us refuse to settle for comfortable Christianity.
Let us become Christlike disciples who make Christlike disciples.
Let us strengthen churches that multiply churches.
Let us carry the gospel to those who have never heard.
And let us labour together until the unfinished task is finished, for the glory of God and the honour of Jesus Christ, the King of all nations.
