God has entrusted every believer with spiritual gifts.
Key Scriptures: Matt. 25:14–30; Rom. 12:3–8; 1 Cor. 12:4–27; Eph. 4:11–16; 1 Pet. 4:10–11
Your Gift Is Not for You Alone
God has entrusted every believer with spiritual gifts.
In the previous blog, we discovered that He also gives every believer a unique calling.
The final question is this:
What will you do with what God has given you?
Many believers spend years discovering their gifts but never fully develop or faithfully use them. Others compare themselves with more gifted people and become discouraged.
Still others bury their gifts because of fear, comfort, or busyness.
Jesus teaches that God never gives gifts merely to be admired.
He gives them to be faithfully used for His glory and the good of others.
We Are Stewards, Not Owners
Peter writes:
"As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God." (1 Peter 4:10, NKJV)
Notice the word "stewards."
A steward manages what belongs to someone else.
Our gifts are not our personal possessions. They belong to Christ. He has entrusted them to us for a season. One day we will stand before Him and give an account of how faithfully we used them.
The question will not be:
"How gifted were you?"
But:
"How faithful were you?"
The Parable of the Talents
Jesus illustrated this truth through the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30).
A master entrusted different amounts to three servants.
Each received according to his ability.
Two servants invested what they had received.
One buried his talent.
The master did not compare the servants with one another.
He evaluated their faithfulness.
To both faithful servants he said:
"Well done, good and faithful servant... Enter into the joy of your lord." (Matthew 25:21)
The lesson is clear.
God does not expect equal results from everyone. He expects faithful stewardship from everyone.
Every Gift Is Important
Paul compares the Church to the human body.
The eye cannot replace the hand.
The hand cannot replace the foot.
Each member has a unique function.
Likewise, every spiritual gift contributes to the health of Christ's Body.
Some gifts are highly visible. Others remain largely unseen.
Some believers preach. Others quietly pray.
Some lead publicly. Others faithfully encourage behind the scenes.
Some teach large groups. Others disciple one person at a time.
Heaven values faithful service more than public recognition.
No gift is insignificant when it is surrendered to Christ.
Develop the Gifts God Has Given You
Spiritual gifts are given by grace, but they must also be developed.
Paul encouraged Timothy:
"Do not neglect the gift that is in you..." (1 Timothy 4:14)
He later wrote:
"Stir up the gift of God which is in you..." (2 Timothy 1:6)
The Greek expression ἀναζωπυρέω (anazōpyreō) means to rekindle, fan into flame, or keep burning brightly.
God-given gifts flourish through:
- Prayer.
- Study of Scripture.
- Obedience.
- Practice.
- Mentoring.
- Feedback.
- Humility.
- Perseverance.
Natural abilities improve through training.
Spiritual gifts also become more effective as we faithfully exercise them under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Use Your Gifts with Christlike Character
Giftedness alone never impresses God. Character always matters.
Paul places his great chapter on love (1 Corinthians 13) between two chapters on spiritual gifts.
This is no accident. Without love:
Teaching becomes cold.
Leadership becomes controlling.
Giving becomes self-centred.
Prophecy becomes harsh.
Knowledge becomes pride.
Every gift must be governed by:
- Love.
- Humility.
- Holiness.
- Integrity.
- Compassion.
- Dependence upon the Holy Spirit.
The greatest testimony is not giftedness without Christlikeness.
It is giftedness shaped by Christlikeness.
Use Your Gifts to Serve, Not to Be Served
Jesus declared:
"The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve..." (Mark 10:45)
If the Lord of glory used His life in service, His followers must do the same.
Spiritual gifts are not platforms for personal success. They are instruments of loving service.
We serve:
The Church.
Our families.
Our communities.
The poor.
The lost.
The nations.
Every gift finds its highest fulfilment when it reflects the servant heart of Jesus.
Use Your Gifts Wherever God Places You
Some believers think spiritual gifts operate only inside church buildings.
The New Testament teaches otherwise. Your gifts can glorify Christ:
- In your home.
- At your workplace.
- In your school.
- In your business.
- In your profession.
- In your neighbourhood.
- During missions.
- Among the poor.
- In government.
- Through media.
- Through acts of hospitality.
- Wherever God sends you.
The Kingdom of God extends far beyond Sunday services.
Every sphere of society needs believers who faithfully exercise their gifts under the lordship of Christ.
Your Gifts Are Meant to Multiply
Healthy gifts produce healthy disciples. Healthy disciples become faithful servants.
Faithful servants develop new leaders. New leaders strengthen churches.
Healthy churches plant churches. Churches together reach the nations.
This is why your gift matters. Its influence extends far beyond what you can presently see.
One teacher may train future pastors.
One encourager may strengthen a future missionary.
One faithful giver may support church planting among unreached peoples.
One mentor may disciple someone who reaches thousands.
Never underestimate what God can accomplish through one surrendered life.
Live for the Master's Commendation
The world measures success by popularity.
Jesus measures success by faithfulness.
One day every believer will stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
On that day, earthly applause will mean nothing.
What will matter is hearing our Lord say:
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
There can be no greater reward.
Live today in the light of that day.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Everything I have belongs to You.
Thank You for saving me, gifting me, and calling me into Your service.
Forgive me whenever I have neglected or misused what You entrusted to me.
Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit.
Help me develop my gifts with diligence, exercise them with humility, and use them with love.
May every ability, every opportunity, and every season of my life bring glory to You and help build Your Church until every nation has heard the gospel.
Amen.
Your Next Step
Take time this week to ask yourself:
- Am I faithfully using the gifts God has entrusted to me?
- Which gifts need further development through study, mentoring, or practice?
- Am I serving for Christ's glory or for human recognition?
- Who could I train or encourage to discover and use their own gifts?
Remember this truth:
God created you intentionally.
God gifted you graciously.
God called you personally.
Now He invites you to serve Him faithfully.
Do not bury what He has entrusted to you.
Develop it.
Use it.
Multiply it.
Offer it back to Christ with joy.
For when Christlike believers faithfully use their God-given gifts according to their God-given calling, the Church is strengthened, leaders are raised, disciples are multiplied, churches are planted, the poor are served, the marketplace is transformed, and the nations are reached with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
