The Missing Secret of the Christian Life
Why do many sincere Christians struggle to live like Christ?
They attend church faithfully.
They read Christian books.
They pray.
They genuinely desire to please God.
Yet many still find themselves defeated by the same sins, discouraged by repeated failures, and frustrated by slow spiritual growth.
Why?
Often, the answer is that they are trying to imitate Christ without first understanding their union with Christ.
The Christian life is not simply a matter of trying harder. It is a matter of living from a new reality.
The secret of spiritual transformation is not merely following Jesus as an example. It is living in union with Jesus as our life.
What Is Union with Christ?
Union with Christ is the spiritual relationship in which every believer is joined to Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit through faith, sharing in His life, His death, His resurrection, His righteousness, His inheritance, and His mission.
This is one of the richest truths in the New Testament.
The Apostle Paul repeatedly uses expressions such as:
- "In Christ"
- "In Him"
- "With Christ"
- "Through Christ"
These expressions occur well over one hundred times in Paul's letters. They are not merely figures of speech. They describe the believer's new position and identity.
The Christian is no longer merely a person who believes certain truths about Christ.
The Christian is a person who has been united to Christ Himself.
Jesus Explained It as a Vine and Branches
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus gave one of the clearest pictures of this union.
"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit..." (John 15:5, NKJV).
A branch possesses no independent life.
Its strength.
Its nourishment.
Its fruitfulness.
Its very existence depend entirely upon the vine.
Separated from the vine, the branch cannot bear fruit.
Likewise, Jesus declares:
"...without Me you can do nothing."
Not "very little."
Not "less effectively."
Nothing of eternal value can be produced apart from abiding in Christ.
United with Christ in His Death and Resurrection
Our union with Christ is so complete that Scripture says believers participate spiritually in His death, burial, resurrection, and new life.
Paul writes:
"Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him..." (Romans 6:6).
The "old man" refers to the person we were under the dominion of sin.
Through our union with Christ, God's judgment upon sin has already fallen upon Christ, and the believer is no longer enslaved to sin's ruling power.
Paul continues:
"Just as Christ was raised from the dead... even so we also should walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:4)
The resurrection of Jesus is not only an event to celebrate.
It is the source of a new quality of life now available to every believer.
Christ Lives in the Believer
Perhaps no verse summarizes this truth better than Galatians 2:20:
"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me..."
This does not mean our personality disappears.
Rather, the governing center of our life changes.
Christ becomes the source of our desires.
Our strength.
Our wisdom.
Our obedience.
Our love.
Our mission.
The Christian life is therefore not merely imitation.
It is participation in the very life of Christ.
The Holy Spirit Makes This Union Real
Union with Christ is not merely a theological concept.
It becomes a living reality through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Paul writes:
"For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body..." (1 Corinthians 12:13).
At conversion, the Holy Spirit unites the believer with Christ.
He does not simply influence us from outside.
He dwells within us.
The Spirit continually reveals Christ, reminds us of His words, empowers our obedience, and progressively reproduces His character in us.
Without the Holy Spirit, Christlikeness would be impossible.
With the Holy Spirit, transformation becomes God's ongoing work within us.
Living from Our Position in Christ
One of the greatest mistakes Christians make is trying to earn what God has already given.
The New Testament always begins with what God has done before commanding what believers should do.
Consider Paul's pattern:
- You are in Christ.
- Therefore, live as those who are in Christ.
- You have died with Christ.
- Therefore, put sin to death.
- You have been raised with Christ.
- Therefore, seek the things above.
- You are God's beloved child.
- Therefore, walk in love.
Identity always comes before conduct.
Grace always comes before obedience.
Our daily walk flows from our spiritual position.
Abiding Is the Key to Transformation
Jesus repeatedly used one word in John 15:
"Abide."
The Greek word μένω (menō) means to remain, continue, dwell, stay, or make one's home.
Abiding is not a momentary experience. It is a continual relationship.
We abide by:
- Trusting Christ completely.
- Feeding on His Word daily.
- Walking in obedience.
- Depending upon the Holy Spirit.
- Living a life of prayer.
- Remaining in His love.
- Fellowshipping with His people.
- Yielding every area of life to His lordship.
As branches remain connected to the vine, fruit appears naturally.
Likewise, as believers remain in Christ, His life is increasingly expressed through them.
The Fruit of Union with Christ
A life that abides in Christ becomes increasingly marked by:
- Love instead of selfishness.
- Humility instead of pride.
- Holiness instead of compromise.
- Peace instead of anxiety.
- Joy instead of emptiness.
- Obedience instead of rebellion.
- Compassion instead of indifference.
- Faith instead of fear.
- Perseverance instead of discouragement.
These are not merely human virtues.
They are the character of Christ becoming visible in His people.
Union with Christ Fuels Every Pillar
Everything in this series grows out of our union with Christ.
Because we abide in Christ, we become like Christ.
Because we abide in Christ, we love what He loves and embrace the Great Commission.
Because we abide in Christ, we make disciples who make disciples.
Because we abide in Christ, we discover and faithfully use our spiritual gifts.
Because we abide in Christ, we represent Him in the marketplace with integrity.
Because we abide in Christ, we care for the poor, the needy, and the unreached with His compassion.
Because we abide in Christ, we purify ourselves as we await His glorious appearing.
Union with Christ is not merely one doctrine among many.
It is the source from which every aspect of the Christian life flows.
A Daily Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You that You have not only forgiven me but united me with Yourself.
Teach me to abide in You every moment of every day.
May Your thoughts become my thoughts.
May Your love become my love.
May Your holiness become my pursuit.
May Your mission become my mission.
Live Your life through me so that others may see You in me and glorify the Father.

Ask yourself these questions today:
- Am I trying to live the Christian life by my own strength or by abiding in Christ?
- Which spiritual disciplines help me remain consciously dependent upon Him?
- Is there any area of my life where I have become disconnected from the Vine through disobedience or self-reliance?
- What evidence can I see that the life of Christ is increasingly being expressed through me?
The Christian life is not about striving to become someone you are not.
It is about allowing the life of Christ already within you to be increasingly expressed through you.
As you abide in Him, His life will transform your life.
And as His life transforms your life, the world will see the beauty of Christ reflected in His disciples.
